The 46 miles from Fort William to the port town of Mallaig offers unique history, dramatic lochs and mountains and spectacular sandy beaches.
This journey will take you through Bonnie Prince Charlie country and at Mallaig you can go ‘over the sea to Skye’. This region could fill a holiday on its own.
Travel west out of Fort William along Loch Eil to Glenfinnan. Climb Glenfinnan monument and see the famous Glenfinnan viaduct. Enjoy a cruise on gorgeous Loch Shiel.
The high mountains and quiet glens are breathtaking and there are many easy walks as well as more challenging routes.
The road winds on through the glens, alongside the railway. In summer the Jacobite steam train is a popular way to enjoy the scenic trip to Mallaig. The road twists through the forest and coastline and brings you out to the coast at Arisaig. With white sandy beaches and fabulous views of Skye and the small isles this is well worth a visit.
The busy fishing port of Mallaig is further along the coast. Visitor attractions like Mallaig Heritage Centre ensure there’s plenty to do in all weathers, or take a ferry from here to Skye or the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg, Canna. For real adventure, catch a boat to Knoydart, the remote wilderness that is only accessible by sea.
