Shinty is an ancient stick and ball sport, and is a unique feature of Highland life. The fast and furious game is a great spectator sport and is played by local teams throughout Lochaber.
The game has recently changed season from winter to summer, and matches take place most weekends throughout the warmer months.
Shinty consists of two teams, each with 12 players, and games are exciting and often high scoring affairs, with a goal awarded every time the ball beats the goalkeeper into the 10ft by 12ft goal.
Admission to shinty matches is generally free, with a collection usually made by the home team. There is a charge for major cup finals and semi finals. The playing season lasts from March until September and ends in the sport's showpiece event - the Camanachd Cup Final, which is held in a different venue each year. There are six Lochaber teams:
- Ardnamurchan Camanachd play at Lochaline on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula
- Fort William play at An Aird, Fort William
- Glengarry play at Craigard Park, Invergarry
- Kilmallie play at Canal Parks, Caol
- Lochaber play at Spean Bridge Park, Spean Bridge
- Ballachulish play at Ballachulish Park
