Fishing
Lochaber which straddles the mountains and glens of the west and central Highlands has some of the most diverse wild brown trout loch and stream fishing and Wild Atlantic Salmon river fishing in Scotland. The best waters are invariably for Fly Fishing only though there is some spin fishing availability. No Fishing Licence is required in Scotland though most fresh water fishing requires a permit which can cost from £5.00GBP per day to much more on better quality waters. Permits are generally available from tackle shops, Fishing Schools, estate offices and Tourist Information Centres. The local Fly Fishing School runs private Learn Fly Fishing and guided excursions daily.
There are many lochs and streams at the roadside with countless waters in the surrounding hill country. You may frequently find you have a loch completely to yourself in superb Highland country the habitat of golden eagle, osprey, red deer, pine marten, otter and countless hill and forest birds.
The trout fishing season is from March 15th through 6th October and salmon fishing from 15 January through 30th September. Catch and release is mandatory for most salmon fishing in Scotland though 3 or 4 wild brown trout of over 30cm may be kept daily.
Excellent Pike loch fishing is available with fly, spinning and dead bait fishing permitted. Live Bait is not permitted. Pike fishing is available all year.
The sparkling clear sea waters of the west coast hold great stocks of all manner of sea fish including world class Skate, Sea Bass, Cod, Pollock and Mackerel. Boat and shore fishing locations are numerous with some excellant surf and beach casting along the silver sands in the west.
