Great Day Out

Loch Morar to Tarbet.

Grid reference:  NM 725927
Map:  Landranger 40
Public Transport:  Shiel Buses or train to and from Morar and Mallaig. Bruce Watt cruises from Tarbet to Mallaig via Inverie.

Starting point

This walk requires some planning but is definitely worth it.  The walk starts at the end of the B8008 at Bracorina.  This road is the right turn at Morar off the A830 if you are coming from Fort William (left if travelling from Mallaig).  If parking at the end of this road please make sure that you keep all access clear.

Distance, height and time

The walk takes you along the shore of Loch Morar and then across the bealach to Tarbet on the shore of Loch Nevis.  From here you catch the ferry back to Mallaig.

The walk is about 7 miles, and you should allow at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and add time for sightseeing and photography.

Seasonal and other issues

This walk links up with the Bruce Watt ferry from Tarbet to Mallaig and MUST be booked in advance. (Call: 01687 461320, Email: brucewattcruises@aol.com).  It is best if you have two cars, one parked at Bracorina, and the other at Mallaig so you can save a long walk (or short taxi ride) back to the start of the walk.  Alternatively catch the bus or train to Morar and start the walk from there. This will add 2 1/2 miles onto the walk, but simplifies things as you can get both the bus and the train from Mallaig for the return journey.

Although the walk is well defined, it is very remote so please leave a route plan or tell someone where you are going.

Walk Description

The walk description is very simple, but the scenery is magnificent.  As you walk along the lochside you will pass cleared and abandoned crofts, and signs that this quiet area was once full of people.

From Bracorina follow the road to its end.  After crossing the wooden bridge, the path continues onto the old road, which follows the shore of Loch Morar.  After about 5 1/4 miles the track splits - take the left fork which heads up throught the valley to Tarbet on the shores of Loch Nevis.  This is where the ferry picks you up from, you can enjoy the fabulous views of the wilderness of Knoydart along with Skye and the Small Isles as they come into view around the head of Loch Nevis.

Facilities

There are no facilities on the walk.

Mallaig is a large fishing port with most facilities.

Further Info

REMEMBER TO BOOK THE FERRY FOR THE RETURN JOURNEY - or else it will be a 7 mile walk back to the car at Bracorina!
