Bed and Breakfast

Strictly speaking, B&B is a simple arrangement - literally a bed and breakfast in someone's home.  This may be in a modern house, farmhouse or inn. However, many B&B's are much, much more than that, offering 5 star luxury, indulgent facilities and top-notch service.  Be aware : unlike chain hotels, you will often find that payment is cash only, especially in rural areas, and access to your room isn't always available during the day.  But where B&B's excel themselves is the personal touch and the opportunity to stay in locations where larger hotels wouldn't be found.

Guest Houses

B&B or guest house - what's the difference?  Not a great deal, to be honest.  Guest houses tend to be larger and run as a business, often offering dinners, licenced bar and guests' lounge.  However, they still retain the personal touch of staying in a locals' home.

B&B's and guest houses in Fort William & the Outdoor Capital are famous for their Full Scottish Breakfasts, which may include sausages, bacons, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, and local specialities like black pudding, lorne or venison sausages, tattie scones and even haggis!  Some breakfast menus may include more options such as local smoked salmon, kippers, smoked haddock or a continental breakfast using local cheeses and ham.

Check in advance if your bed and breakfast offers evening meals - those in rural areas often do due to their location.  Otherwise, try the local pubs and restaurants or stay in an inn or restaurant with rooms for the ultimate convenience.
